How to calculate CGPA [Check yours now]

This posts will guide and teach you on how to calculate your Grade Point Average (G.P.A) and also Cumulative Grade Point Average (C.G.P.A). This is usually done when you must have seen your semester results to know where your stand is in the university.

What do I mean by stand? I mean whether you are in

  • First class
  • Second class upper
  • Second class lower
  • Third class
  • Pass
  • Fail.
After going through this post, I assure you that when ever you are asked to calculate your G.P.A, it will as simple as ABC.

BASIC DEFINITIONS

  • Letter grades are in alphabetical representation. Point weighting is the number equivalent of letter Grades.
  • Credit hours may be defined as the contact hours assigned to each course per week per semester.
  • Grade Point (GP) is the product of the point weighing and the credit hour(s) for a given course.
  • Point grade= point weighing  X  credit hour
  • Grade point Average in any semester is the ration of the sum of grade points to the sum of credit hour(s) in other words avarage performance.
  • GPA = Point grade/Work load
  • Cummulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) is the up-to-date mean of the grade points earned by the student in the program of study.
  • However, it is usually computed for each Academic year.
  • CGPA = (1st Semester GPA + 2nd Semester GPA) / 2
  • Final Cumulative Grade Point Average (FCGPA) is the sum of all your CGPA divided by the number of years spent in the programme of study.

FOR EXAMPLE, THIS IS THE GRADING SYSTEM IN UNIVERSITY IF NIGERIA

% Scale Letter Point weighing
70-100 A 5
60-69 B 4
50-59 C 3
45-49 D 2
0-44 F 0

SAMPLE OF A STUDENT'S 1ST SEMESTER RESULT

Course Credit Letter  Point  Point
 Hour grades weight grade
GSP101 2 B 4 2 X 4 = 8
GSP102 2 B 4 2 X 4 = 8
SOC103 2 B 4 2 X 4 = 8
POL101 3 A 5 3 X 5 = 15
MTH111 3 A 5 3 X 5 = 15
PHY111 3 A 5 3 X 5 = 15
ENGR101 2 C 3 2 X 3 = 6
BIO101 2 A 5 2 X 5 = 10
PHY121 2 C 3 2 X 3 = 6
Total= 21 Total= 91
G.P.A = 91/21 = 4.333

G.P.A CLASS OF DEGREE
4.5 - 5.0 1ST CLASS
3.5 - 4.49 2ND CLASS UPPER
2.5 - 3.49 2ND CLASS LOWER
1.5 - 2.49 3RD CLASS
1.0 - 1.49 PASS
0.0 - 0.99 FAIL

JAMB scraps use of scratch cards

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board has scrapped the use of scratch cards in any of its transactions and services, describing it as “archaic”, its Registrar/Chief Executive, Prof. Is-haq Oloyede, has announced.

He also demanded that the Federal Government should revert to the former system where serving Vice Chancellors of Universities were made chairmen of the Governing Board of JAMB.
A statement issued by the Spokesperson of JAMB, Dr. Fabian Benjamin, obtained by THE PUNCH on Sunday, said, Oloyede made the announcement in Abuja in a paper he delivered during a meeting of the Association of Vice Chancellors of Nigerian Universities.

According to him, JAMB would be using the platform of pin vending to check all forms of fraudulent practices which was prevalent with the use of scratch cards.
“The decision is as a result of its consistent subjection to fraudulent practices, the use of scratch cards is archaic and it is the drive by JAMB to also promote accountability in line with government’s zero tolerance for corruption. This new system will be accessible through the options of web payment, ATM issued cards (Visa, verve and Mastercard), online quick teller, ATM payment, quick teller mobile application and Bank Branch case/card”, he said.
Oloyede said years ago, the understanding was that only serving Vice-Chancellors were made chairmen of Governing Board of JAMB.

While appealing that government should go back to the practice from inception, Oloyede added that since the agency is a creation of the Committee of Vice-Chancellors, it would only be proper for them to be clearly recognised as active stakeholders to avoid any acrimony between tertiary institutions and JAMB.
He believed that going back to the old practices would “engender good synergies and harmonious relationship with a view to effectively delivering on its mandates.”

Oloyede recalled that for almost two decades, specifically between 1977 and 1993, only serving Vice-Chancellors were made Chairmen of the Board of JAMB, from Prof Oladipo Akinkugbe, VC University of Ilorin; Prof Donald E.U Ekong, VC University of Port Harcourt; Prof Adamu Baike, VC University of Benin; Prof Mahdi Adamu, VC University of Sokoto and Prof Isa Mohammed, VC University of Abuja.

He said, “This practice which promoted harmony and quality inputs on the Board’s matriculation activities have since been forgotten or neglected".

The appointment of the chairman of the Board could be restricted to only heads of tertiary institutions in Nigeria perhaps in rotational basis among the Vice-Chancellor of Universities, Rectors of Polytechnics, Monotechnics and Provosts of Colleges of Education.

Senate extends JAMB result's validity to three years

The Senate on Thursday approved the extension of the validity of the results of the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examinations (UTME) being conducted by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) to three years.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the extension was contained in the new amendments made to the Act establishing the board.
The Bill approving the amendment of the Act was passed at plenary on Thursday., and the senate said that the extension was granted to reduce the financial burden of the examination on parents.
The passage of the Bill followed the report of the Committee on Tertiary Education and TETFund chaired by Jubrin Barau (APC Kano North).
In the report, the committee said the validity was extended in view of the financial hardship experienced by parents in sponsoring their wards for the examination.
On June 1, the Senate read JAMB Amendment Bill 2016 for the second time and referred same to the Committee on Tertiary Institutions and TETFund for further considerations.
The purpose of the bill is to among other things, amend the JAMB Act to increase validity period of JAMB examinations from one academic year to three academic years.
The Bill was generated after a motion moved on the floor in November, 2015.
